The Brief
This booking came to us through a recommendation from another venue we'd worked with — a referral we didn't even know was happening until the couple got in touch. We had our first call around eight months before the wedding, and rather than talk about genres in the abstract, we shared a couple of our wedding mixes so they could hear a full set end to end. What landed was the commercial side of Afrobeat — familiar and radio-friendly, easy for a mixed-generation guest list to move to — blended with R&B and Top 40. Alongside that shared reference, we gave them the option to send across their own track list, so the night carried both what the room already knew and the songs that mattered to them. Once the date was confirmed, the wedding organiser sent through the full run sheet, and the venue's own team got in touch separately to request our PAT testing certificate and public liability insurance well ahead of the day.
Our Approach
Pelham House runs a tight but sensible turnaround. Guests finish the wedding breakfast in the reception room, then move out to the garden for an hour while the room is flipped for the evening — and that gap is exactly when the setup happens. For this wedding, that meant two large moving heads on their own controller, two smaller moving head washes, four uplighters around the room, two RCF J8 speakers, and a Pioneer DDJ-SRT on the booth itself. Just under an hour to build the whole rig, tested and ready before the room reopened.
The evening ran to a schedule agreed well in advance — guests brought together for the entrance, a quiet playlist running under the reception's own events, then dinner and speeches before the real party opened. Once the lights dropped, the set moved through Afrobeat, R&B and Top 40, reading the floor rather than working strictly to a script. The standout moment came right at the very end of the night: Cameo's Candy as the closing song, and the entire room went for it — one of those all-in, everybody-singing dance floor moments a wedding DJ lives for.
The Result
None of this happened by accident on the night. The sound direction was agreed months out, the couple had heard exactly what they were booking before they booked it, the compliance paperwork was sorted well ahead of arrival, and the setup was built around the venue's own turnaround rather than fighting it.
